Everything worked as you described. It doesn’t work when there is no masterfile. In order to compile I do C-c C-c, then it asks “Command: AUCTeX will allow one process for each document, plus one process for the region file to be active at the same time. Customize TeX-file-extensions and add “ins” to it, that should do the trick. Use C-h k followed by a keypress to find the right string to pass into kbd.
If you fix the current region with C-c C-t C-rthen it will get used for more commands even though mark and point may change. At least is it possible to simply compile without having to confirm the latex command? It is also possible to compile automatically the whole document until it is ready with a single command: I would like to have a simple shortcut, like pressing F1 or some other key combination to compile and then view the document.

You should set this variable to match the name of all files, for which it is a good idea to append a TeX-master file variable entry automatically. If AUCTeX finds the line indicating the end of the header in a master file TeX-header-endit can figure out for itself that this is aucrex master file.
