This was the first in the series and was originally published in Arthur Evans Robert Hudson Very disappointing since I have been waiting patiently for this series to come to the US, but, well, this episode, the clubbable woman, makes little sense and is mushed together without any care for logic, character development, plot, atmosphere and the outrageous characterizations of cluhbable two main characters.
And I might or might not have gone on to read the next one. The two spar constantly and yet it is clear they admire each other deeply, for all their differences.
Yes, he was a strong starter, but I would not necessarily have seen the full flowering of thirty years later, which was really something. I still find Ellie rather irritating too! I almost didn’t finish it but pursued it to the end. And I admit, the casual sexist attitudes made this one feel dated. I never did get round to reading the later ones but clubabble determined to try and get there more or less in chronological order — I do get the impression that Hill cluhbable want to experiment with the form and from some of the talkback on this post I get the impression that you and many other fans were left either dissatisfied or mystefied in the wrong way by some of the approaches to the later books.
Plus I didn’t care for any of the people in the book. Andy, as a leading figure both in the club and in Mid Yorks life, knows everybody and this gives him access to ‘inside information’. Pete, still single, spends much of his time having a rather annoying internal monologue, partly about the attractions of the various women he meets in the course of the investigation, and partly about his resentment and reluctant admiration for his boorish boss.
A great literary double act and my favourite mismatched duo. There is, however, nothing that works.
Having once been a contender, these days Connie struggles to line out for the rugby fourths. A good enough entry to the Dalziel and Pascoe series. I was initially a bit reluctant to use the cover actually as I thought it might be a bit strong, but it is so much of its time that I found it hard to resist. The book served its purpose in keeping me occupied for a few evenings, but doesn’t make me want to read any more by the author.
Andy is as brash and uncouth as he will always be, without yet the depth of characterisation that reveals the intelligence, subtlety and loyalty to his junior colleagues that is seen in later wiman.
