Pete, still single, spends much of his time having a rather annoying internal monologue, partly about the attractions of the various women he meets in the course of the investigation, and partly about his resentment and reluctant admiration for his boorish boss.

A great literary double act and my favourite mismatched duo. There is, however, nothing that works.

Having once been a contender, these days Connie struggles to line out for the rugby fourths. A good enough entry to the Dalziel and Pascoe series. I was initially a bit reluctant to use the cover actually as I thought it might be a bit strong, but it is so much of its time that I found it hard to resist. The book served its purpose in keeping me occupied for a few evenings, but doesn’t make me want to read any more by the author.

Andy is as brash and uncouth as he will always be, without yet the depth of characterisation that reveals the intelligence, subtlety and loyalty to his junior colleagues that is seen in later wiman.
